Mid-Autumn Festival: Tradition, Reunion and Timeless Oriental Warmth
With over two decades of experience in international trade, I’ve always believed that global business cooperation is far more than product transactions. It acts as a cultural bridge, building trust and lasting friendships between partners worldwide. The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of China’s most beloved traditional festivals, perfectly carries the core Chinese values of family reunion, gratitude and harmony. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month when the moon shines fullest and brightest each year, it is a meaningful cultural holiday worth exploring.
The Origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival has a history of more than 2,000 years, rooted in ancient Chinese moon worship and harvest ceremonies. Dating back to the Shang Dynasty, our ancestors held rituals to honour the moon, praying for bumper harvests and peaceful lives. It gradually developed into a popular folk celebration during the Tang Dynasty, flourished widely in the Song Dynasty, and finally became one of the most important festivals alongside Chinese New Year in the Ming and Qing dynasties.Unlike noisy festive celebrations, Mid-Autumn Festival is quiet and warm. The round full moon symbolises wholeness, reflecting people’s deep longing for family reunion — the core spirit of this age-old festival.
The Legend of Chang’e Flying to the Moon
When introducing Mid-Autumn Festival to overseas clients over the years, the most well-known story is the legend of Chang’e Flying to the Moon.Long ago, ten suns appeared in the sky at once, scorching farmlands and bringing disaster to humanity. A heroic archer named Hou Yi shot down nine suns and saved the world. As a reward, he received an immortality elixir.Hou Yi did not want to leave his beloved wife Chang’e, so he kept the elixir at home. Later, a greedy apprentice tried to steal the magic potion. To stop it from falling into the wrong hands, Chang’e swallowed the elixir. She floated up to the moon palace and became the moon goddess.Missing his wife terribly, Hou Yi placed fruits and pastries in his courtyard every year on the full-moon night. Later, this practice evolved into the custom of moon viewing and moon worship for Mid-Autumn Festival.
